Future map

Those days, I'm considering how big the new zone should be. And the option I like most is creating a really huge map. But players won't have to explore all. I mean, the quests will take place in a small part of the whole map. The rest of the will be there just for people who want to explore.
Doing that, I want to give players the feeling of being in a huge world. WoW players know what I mean: you don't have to explore all Azeroth, but if you like it, you can do it.
GTA:San Andreas is another example. The game takes place in 3 main cities, but you can find small side quests in small towns lost in the mountains.

But before doing it, I want to have your opinions about that.

  1. My only concern would be biting off more than you can chew. Filling the out-of-the-way places with anything at all is more effort than not...

    2. She is really pretty, but I´ve never heard about her.

After all, I forgot to tell you my opinion about the map size. For me, you can keep doing exactly as you have been doing, adding mor map according to the growning of the game. Or you may do instead of a big map, split it in "chapters", just like Doom or Duke Nukem 3D.

      Saludos

  4. I say yes, if you include bonus material in the extra parts, for us to explore there must be something to find. right?

  5. Only if you figure out how to properly optimize huge areas. Your game seems to render everything and process all AI, even outside the viewable area, which is probably why it runs so slow. I hate to think how much worse it could get...

    1. I'd have to agree with this. Either that, or "instance" each area. I'd say that'd probably be much more preferable, so that even slow machines can keep the game going as well as a faster machine. For the map you have now, I'd say its the right size, possibly instance off the cave. Beyond that, it's good.

As for what I enjoy, Go big maps!! But a big maps no fun if you can't explore it all because you're moving at an inch a minute.

    2. I totally agree with you. But I know how to have a huge map without any additional computational cost.
It's just having two maps and a overlaping zone. Map A is in frame 1, and map B in frame 2. When Beth is in the overlaping zone (so going from A to B or otherwise), I can change the frame and players won't notice.
      :)

About the movement, you'll find wind rune level 2, 3 and more. xD

  6. Two things:
    - You should avoid using a huge map, it will make the game really slow. Instead, make a lot of small maps in different frames, so the game speed doesn't change (at last it should not). Or else you can aim to a huuuge world in one map, but make an script that delete the far enemies (and creates them when you get closer). Anyhow, even games like WOW and GTA have a lot of measures so you can walk in a big world without needing a super computer: the textures and 3D models lower it's quality until you cannot see them anymore, then they get erased...
    - The other thing is that before you waste effort making a lot of extra zones, it's better if you finish the main quests first, and then preceed with the extras.

  7. I'm not a big fan of large maps. Smaller maps linked together is better. Make the zone as large as you like...just don't make it one giant map. :)

  8. Luke seems to know what he's talking about so I'll back him on this one. But I do love huge worlds a lot of areas to explore. Keep doin what your doin, love the game.

  11. If you're going to make the map huge then you'd better be able to fill it out.
Hours and hours of empty space isn't fun at all.

    1. I'll add some side content, but players are not required to explore if they don't want.

  12. If that huge map is just for exploring then I vote no. Add some road sign and quests then yes.

  16. I think it sounds ambitious. It also sounds like you'll have a lot of space to work and play for later updates. Go for it! :D

  17. I would surely like it, yet I would like to have a map, or at least to be capable of finding one... I'm not worried about the game speed, I know you can handle that, I'm more worried about my lack of topografy, 'cause I will go explore, but I'd see me get lost pretty easily...

  18. I'm sure people will enjoy large areas, but personally I'd rather have smaller ones that are actually interesting.

  19. Large areas offer plenty of oppurtunities. Can't wait!

  20. It's probably better to have extra space in the main portal because then you don't need to meticulously retool or add areas based on questlines or events or triggers you want to work on in the future. You'll just have to find an empty area to put stuff in.

  22. You could always do what the ydid in Amnesia: The Dark Decent, and block the screen with a bit of words describing the next area, or a bit of story line to further a plot... This is always fun! :D
